Cukarin

L'avis de Gault&Millau

The finest souvenir you can bring from the island of Korčula are sweets from Cukarin (cukar = local term for sugar), a small pastry shop located in the centre of Korčula, which has been run by its owner and pastry chef Smiljana Matijaca for almost three decades. Following the recipes inherited from her grandmother, she makes traditional Korčula pastries, which she sells out by noon. Klašuni are stuffed with walnut cream, harubice are carob cakes with homemade orange jam, amaretti are made from ground almonds, and sponge cake cukarini are best dipped in prošek, the sweet wine from Dalmatia. Marco Polo is a true calorie bomb made of cream and chopped walnuts, wrapped in chocolate, while lojnica is a sweet bread made of walnuts, figs and almonds with lard, which simply melts in your mouth. Sweets from Cukarin preserve the taste of the traditional island's festivities and their quality has been maintained for years. But if you want to leave Korčula with a box of sweet souvenirs, be sure to order them in advance because Mrs. Smiljana is not interested in industrial production. Cukarin is a real boutique of authentic ingredients and flavours.
