L'avis de Gault&Millau
Just to drive or to walk through the forest road, from the small town of Lokve to the restaurant Eva, is very therapeutic. Sitting on the terrace provides a beautiful view on the tall trees of pine and beech, and on Lake Lokve. The scenery is just as beautiful in a summer sunny day or during the winter, with the snow. In winter time we suggest you to book a place in the restaurant with large glazed doors that divide the terrace from the interior. We’ve started the lunch with their traditional specialty, fried breaded frog legs. Again, they were crunchy on the outside, juicy inside and not at all greasy, with the home made tartare sauce. We also tasted the excellent smoked trout and home made hunter’s style pâté, with fresh bread that they bake themselves. As a main course we ordered the Eva Goulash with venison, wild berries and mushrooms, served with home made bread dumplings. It was all delicious. The young chef Mario Šubat likes to surprise the guests with daily offers. The friendly waitress recommended a special menu: an amazing, well prepared venison burger with wild potatoes. As dessert we chose the Daily cake: white tart with fragrant pieces of forest fruits in a light cream. At Eva you have to taste the aperitifs Mountain liquor and Papra - made by the local producer Vid Arbanas, and the trout from the nearby fish mariculture in the Kupa River Valley. The wine list could be a little more ambitious. Prices are moderate, the staff attentive, food is fresh and tasty, the size of the portions big enough. The chef, who is the owner of the restaurant, creates new dishes with fresh seasonal ingredients, making a real effort to please his guests. Just to have a lunch at Eva is a good reason for an excursion to Gorski Kotar.
