Meat lovers have certainly heard of restaurant JIST, located in Viškovo, a suburb of Rijeka. The restaurant, with warm colours and wood elements, is divided into two halls. In the first there are high tables and chairs, large windows and open grill stations. When you head to the second, more formal hall, the first thing that catches your eye are two large cabinets for meat dry ageing and a big wall with a large shelf for wines. The staff is young, agile and will answer to all your questions about the different pieces of meat that they offer. At your request they will even show it to you, so that you can make your choice easier. The wine list is large and consists of mostly Croatian labels. We started with two great dishes. The Torchon de foie gras (the marinated goose liver wrapped in a kitchen towel – torchon - and poached) was excellent, rich in flavour, with a creamy texture. It was served with lightly peppered sprouts, chamomile and green apple jelly that gave the necessary freshness and little crumbs of bitter cocoa. The veggie plate was a very pleasant surprise. Lots of textures and perfectly balanced flavours of creamy goat cheese, broccoli, beets, mushrooms and pecan nuts. For the main course, we chose two different dishes: the Rubia gallega steak (a Galician autochthonous breed of cattle) and a dish with a significant name - Black Sheep. The steak was perfectly prepared, with a very intense flavour, served with a rich purée with plenty of grated truffles. The Black Sheep, dedicated to lamb meat prepared in three different ways: a perfectly baked cutlet served with delicious grilled vegetables, an aromatic breaded meatball with creamy purée and a perfectly spiced mini burger was excellent. We ended up with a real autumn dessert, a crunchy apple pie with ice cream and fresh cream. At every new visit, JIST raises the quality of cooking and the creativity in its dishes. We definitely recommend the place for a lunch or a dinner. We are sure you will not regret it.
