L'avis de Gault&Millau

Zijavica is a family tavern located right next to the beautiful beach of Mošćenička draga, not far from Opatija. The tavern is charming and very nicely decorated; on the backside there is a cosy garden sitting area and on the front side a nice terrace on the beach, a few meters from an incredibly turquoise sea with a beautiful view of the bay. The last few years they have been particularly dedicated to raising their cooking to a higher level and it really shows. They offer a modern interpretation of the traditional local cuisine from Kvarner and Istria. We were warmly welcomed. They presented us the menu with the addition of several dishes that change, depending on weather conditions or daily catch. The wines are mostly Istrian. You can get most of them by glass and every week you can choose from a new selection. We started with their ceviche, highly praised by other guests, which turned out to be completely justified. Red mullet, scampi (langoustines) and octopus marinated in citrus fruits, with the addition of onions, celery and croutons were excellent. Everything was served on an aromatic sauce of cherry tomatoes (they grow vegetables in the restaurant garden). A dish bursting with colours and flavours. We tried the marinated scampi tails with a green apple brunoise (finely diced apples) on a light celery mousse. We were delighted by its freshness and its colours. Then we tried the extremely soft octopus served with excellent gnocchi alla Romana and young green beans. Again a dish that shows that in Zijavica they really know what they are doing. It would be a shame to leave without trying the scampi, the langoustines from Kvarner, since the family has a long tradition of fishing (especially langoustines). We had them on the grill and enjoyed the firm meat and their sweet taste. We finished our meal with a delicious apple pie. At first glance Zijavica does not reveal all what it has to offer, but this amazing tavern deserves a lot of attention. Visit them and be ready to enjoy the freshest food that sea can offer combined with a creative modern cuisine. We can happily announce that this year they improved their score and won the third Gault&Millau toque.
