Laurus

L'avis de Gault&Millau

This year Restaurant Laurus has expanded its offer, adding a rich selection of pizzas to its menu. They also changed their name in Bistro&Pizzeria Laurus, although food will remain similar to the one they had served so far. Located in the Hotel Villa Kapetanović, on the hills of Opatija, the restaurant has a truly amazing view on the bay of Kvarner. In summer it is worth to welcome the sunset on their terrace. The spacious hall, dominated by a large aquarium, is classically decorated, with elegant woodwork and white tablecloths. There are no more tasting menus in the new concept, but there is a good choice of attractive dishes. The changes were primarily due to epidemiological reasons and a different, mostly local clientèle. The bistro and the pizzeria are a more casual form of dining, adapted to new times. But at Laurus the quality remains the priority. They brought an Italian pizzaiolo, Giuseppe Perfido, to be sure that their guests get the real Italian pizza baked in a bread oven. During our visit we enjoyed an excellent sea bass carpaccio and a tuna tartare, made from extremely fresh raw fish. The same was with the big, delicious and perfectlly grilled Kvarner scampi (langoustines). We especially remember the fullness of the taste of the excellent homemade gnocchi with scampi tails and black truffles. In the new Laurus, they have reduced the wine list to about twenty labels, but they emphasize that you can drink top quality wines in the price range from 180 kn to 700 kn. A place to go.

Villa Ariston

Maršala Tita 179, 51410 Opatija

Cuisine d'auteur Méditerranéen

At the very edge of Opatija, you can find Villa Ariston, a restaurant and a boutique hotel. Perched on a cliff, the villa gives the impression of emerging from the sea. As soon as you see it you realize that there is a rich history behind the walls. The interior is very well preserved and reminds you of the splendor of the nobles in whose possession it was. The terrace of the restaurant gives a new definition to the word romantic. Beautiful views, lavishly furnished tables and lovely, white plates. With an earlier reservation it is possible to experience a memorable evening in a special pavilion located above the sea. The interior of the restaurant is equally elegant, so you won’t go wrong if you want to dine within the walls of this impressive building. As we visited the restaurant on a beautiful, autumn day, our lunch was all about pumpkin and porcini mushrooms. We started with a great pumpkin mousse with the addition of pumpkin seeds, pumpkin oil and dehidrated bacon. A real autumnal plate. Then we tried the excellent, silky and rich pumpkin soup that won us over at the first spoonful. The next thing we tried were excellent ravioli stuffed with skuta (a kind of local ricotta cheese), from Učka mountain with sauce made of porcini mushrooms that were picked in the woods above the villa. A very good dish, that could be a little more spicy. Then we chose two main meat dishes. The confit of lamb from the island of Cres was excellent, soft and very tasty. The pea cream perfectly matched the rich flavour of the lamb meat, and the carrots and cauliflower au gratin were very well prepared. The pork fillet in pistachio crust was also very good. The meat remained juicy, and was served with delicious pumpkin gnocchi. We ended our lunch with another tribute to autumn, an interpretation of chestnut and chocolate pie. Chestnuts were prepared in two ways, as a cream and glazed, our favourite. The chocolate mousse and crispy dough were almost unnecessary next to the great chestnut. When you want something romantic, or a fine dining experience in a quiet and beautiful setting, we are sure that restaurant Villa Ariston will satisfy all your needs and desires.

Nobilion

Ulica Viktora Cara Emina 1A, 51414 Ika, Opatija

Nobilion is a fine dining restaurant in the luxury boutique hotel Ikador, located by the sea, in Ika, near Opatija. The restaurant is decorated in a modern and minimalist style, dominated by pastel blue and gold colour. There is also a private dining room Riva privée chef’s table for up to 8 people, where the maître d’hôtel and the chef will take care of you. On warmer days, be sure to sit on the beautiful terrace with a view of the hotel pool and the entire Kvarner in the background. From the first moment in this restaurant you feel special, and the staff will do their best to make you stay that way until the very end. Our visit was during Easter, when they had a special offer, so we tasted a 5-course menu with a very elaborate wine pairing. Otherwise, there is a tasting menu of 5 or 7 courses as well as à la carte offer. We would definitely single out the hommage to Kali tuna: 9 different bites in which chef Dino Knežević showed all the splendor of his talent. The wine list is very good and the restaurant is a member of the prestigious Moët & Chandon Privilege Club, so they have quite a collection of rare champagnes. We started lunch with shiny marinated scampi (langoustines) tails. Only lightly marinated in citrus, sweet and firm scampi meat. This was followed by the plate that impressed us the most during our visit. The bear leek cream had an excellent, powerful flavour, and the creamy cow’s cheese a perfect balance in texture and flavour. A very good manipulation of a food that was at the peak of its season, and the chef once again showed how complex something seemingly simple can be. We then tasted the ravioli with lamb and fava bean cream in dried tomato sauce. Lamb and beans go great together, and when you add a great dough and dried tomatoes that give the dish the necessary contrast of flavours, you get another great plate. The main course was a rump steak served with beetroot risotto and goat cheese. The risotto was excellent, both in texture and rich in flavours. The rump steak was also very tasty, full of smoke, although our impression is that it should be a little less roasted. We finished lunch with a classic. A chocolate soufflé with homemade bourbon vanilla ice cream and raspberry coulis. We would have loved to have some more coulis as its sour taste gave some freshness to the rich chocolate flavour. Icador and Nobilion have only been around for a few years, and their chef Dino is very young. Despite this, they have already taken a very high position on the Croatian gastronomic scene. Our impression is that they will raise the bar over time. Prices are high, but if you take into account the overall impression, then you realize that it’s a great value for money. When you want a touch of luxury, head to Nobilion, where they will make sure you have an unforgettable experience.

Navis

Ivana Matetića Ronjgova 10, 51410 Opatija

Poisson Cuisine d'auteur

Design hotel and restaurant Navis are located in Opatija. As the hotel is built in the rock, you will be impressed by looking at it. On the other side, from the beautiful hotel’s restaurant, whose terrace is on the cliff, you will have once again a breathtaking view. The interior of the restaurant is carefully designed and very modern. Dark walls and contrasting chairs dominate, and the space is full of large windows in order to provide a great view from every position. The staff is young. They greeted us with a smile and presented the menu, by recommending what to eat since the offer is based on local and seasonal ingredients. We started with a beef carpaccio that was excellent, the meat at optimal temperature and texture, served with hard cheese and capers - a real classic. We tried two main dishes – the grilled fish fillet with chard and the beefsteak à la chef. The fish was fresh and juicy, but just properly prepared, without excitement. The chard was brilliantly seasoned. The steak was the best dish we tried during our visit, perfectly cooked, with a crispy crust and buttery texture and served with a very good mustard sauce. For dessert we chose another classic: a chocolate soufflé. It was really excellent, puffed up, fluffy with a full chocolate flavour, accompanied by a delicious vanilla ice cream. Navis is a restaurant where cooking is modern and ambitious, and if you catch a nice day and a beautiful sea view, there is no obstacle to a refined gastronomic experience.
