Gault&Millau review

Restaurant Milan in the family hotel of the same name is located not far from the beach, in Pula’s Stoja district. A favourite place for fish and seafood lovers, Milan has its clientèle, but the large restaurant space is often half empty. Here you know what you will get: traditional Mediterranean cuisine in which there is no flirting with culinary trends. In addition to classic food, the interior decoration is classic too. Decent ambience suitable for business meetings or larger family gatherings. The fish offer is seasonal. To start we ordered, as always, the delicious salted and marinated anchovies. They brought us the good virgin olive oil from their organic production. Then we chose grilled Saint Jacques scallops and macaroni with red mullet. A delicate dish with a simple sauce made of pieces of red mullet cooked with white wine and spices. For the main course, we ordered a perfectly grilled sea bass. The best of all was the monkfish brodetto served with polenta: a delicious dish with large pieces of fish in tomato sauce and Mediterranean spices. Knowing that the chef loves to prepare desserts, we ordered a great chocolate cake. We chose a good bottle of Malvazija by Kozlović. Restaurant Milan has a particularly rich enoteca where you will find hundreds of labels of top national and international wines.

As this year, due to the lockdown, we couldn’t unfortunately visit Batelina we publish the review and the score by Gault&Millau Croatia 2020. In Banjole, near Pula, there is a famous Fish Tavern called Batelina, owned by the Skoko family. Their son David, one of Croatia’s best known chefs, continues to cook in Batelina three days a week. The first thing to remember with Batelina is that you must book your table well in advance, as the place is always full. The second thing is that Batelina is closed in August! As the hosts explain the reason is that during this period there is not enough fish to meet the needs of the guests. And the third thing is that you cannot pay by card but only in cash. There is a warm and cozy atmosphere in the tavern. Tables covered with checkered red tablecloths are placed in three small rooms and in one of them there is a fireplace. The waiter came immediately and told us about the daily offer. We tried the excellent crispy skin of sole with dried tomato paste, a classic saor or marinated sardines, an extremely soft octopus salad and a delicious fish pâté. A bonito (or palamide) carpaccio, different shells and a Saint Jacques followed. A delicious combination of raw fresh fish and shellfish slightly marinated in lemon juice, spiced with oil and Mediterranean aromatic herbs. Then they brought us the grilled scampi (langoustines). Big, fresh, perfectly roasted scampi to lick your fingers. You could feel the aromas and the flavor of the sea in all the dishes. At the end we couldn’t resist the sweet canolo stuffed with goat’s milk curd and caramel. We drank their homemade Malvasia which was proper. Like the other guests, we were greeted at the table by Batelina’s owner and founder, Danilo Skoko, David’s father and a famous fisherman who, together with his wife Alda, opened a tavern 20 years ago. This time again, Batelina confirmed the reputation of a cult fish tavern that offers a different gastronomic experience from most Croatian fish restaurants.

Not far from the ancient Arena, in the center of Pula, there is a hotel and a restaurant called Amfiteatar. Warm colors prevail in the cozy hall of the restaurant. There is also a large wine cabinet. The dishes bear the signature of the extremely creative chef Deniz Zembo, who is constantly inventing different kind of offers. Last year, from June 1 to September 15, he opened on the hotel’s terrace a special fast food Zembie’s street food, offering some delicious burgers, which will be open every year in the same period. That’s not all. The chef holds culinary workshops under the name The Creative Cooking Specialist, which are an integral part of the Culinary Development Center Amfiteatar. In addition to cooking, the center will teach you a lot in the field of nutrition. The chef is especially proud of his health application Circle Diet for Life, an innovative nutrition program that, according to him, contains a revolutionary division of food into groups, 7 circles adapted to different ages. However, the most attractive is the tasting menu that guests will prepare together with the chef, cooking on a large kitchen block that dominates the space. With prior reservation, you can spend some unforgettable time learning to cook with the help of the chef and enjoy all the prepared dishes. Seasonal local products are the backbone of the tasting menu. In addition to the excellent food, you will be delighted by the presentation. Chef Zembo is known for the rich color palette that characterizes his dishes. During your visit to Pula, take a few hours for this exclusive tasting gourmet menu at restaurant Amfiteatar.
