Zlatko Marinović, known as Noštromo, named after his restaurant, is one of the most famous chefs in in Split. For twenty years he has been the favourite chef of the seafood lovers who have recognized him as a true connoisseur. Indeed, Chef Marinović knows everything that swims in the sea. Before he started cooking, he was a top diver and had the opportunity to study the beautiful underwater life. Restaurant Noštromo is located in a small house next to the fish market. There is a wooden bar on the ground floor and food is served upstairs. After the first stairway leading to a smaller gallery space with only a few tables, a few more stairs lead to the attic hall where there are about twenty seats. The walls are covered with art paintings, as the chef is a passionate collector, and there are always vases of fresh roses on white tablecloths. At Noštromo you can enjoy traditional fish dishes, from hearty soup to grilled fish, but they also offer some less known seafood delicacies which, unfortunately, are not always available. Here you can taste sea eggs, with intense aromas and flavours, finely fried, delicate sea wigs, and shark pâté. At the very beginning of our meal we enjoyed that splendor of fresh seafood, just like the carpaccio of thinly sliced fresh tuna and sea bass, seasoned with a little olive oil and served on a young arugula. The chef surprised us with raw marinated scampi on a reduced raspberry and balsamic vinegar sauce, along with crab pâté and toasted sliced almonds which delighted us. The sweet taste of the shrimp blended perfectly with the slightly sour raspberry and balsamic vinegar sauce, as well as the soft texture of the creamy pâté in contrast to the crispy almonds. We then ordered the grilled squid, roasted enough to get the grill smell while staying soft. The hazelnut semifreddo rounded out our meal. Lately Noštromo has been preparing themed dinners at affordable prices, with 3 or 4 courses offering top-notch specialties such as expensive Wagyju beef steaks. Lunch or dinner in Noštromo is a gastronomic experience that you should not miss.
