L'avis de Gault&Millau
In one of the city’s business neighbourhoods, there is the restaurant Rougemarin. With a terrace overlooking a park, especially attractive for business lunches, it is also an ideal spot for an unpretentious, tasty meal. Polite and pleasantly witty waiters contribute to the overall charm of the place, whose owner, chef Marin Medak, created the menu. A good quality selection of meats is enriched with seasonal vegetables and fruits, with dishes of great nutritional balance. The starters are especially delightful. Like the Roasted Pumpkin Salad, or the South American styled soup with aromas, flavours and colours that work well with lime and fennel oil. Everything was plated nicely and promptly. The Fresh Tomato Soup with Baked Ricotta and fennel oil was very good looking and didn’t disappoint us as for its taste. We loved the very mildly seasoned beef tartare, garnished with green onions, watercress and radishes, plated very nicely with chili mayonnaise and crunchy, grilled bread slices. We were less impressed by the smoked pork ribs, which were too dry and oversalted, while the side of crunchy, sweet potato fries was very good. A classic side to smoked ribs, the salad of root vegetables and mayonnaise, made this dish too heavy and caloric. A great choice was their now famous burger, with a soft and very well seasoned beef patty, constructed with fresh, crunchy vegetables and served with fries. The end of our meal was marked by a creamy dessert of orange and chocolate, where the classic combination of the slightly acid orange and rich chocolate was well balanced and refined. The wine offer is good and promotes mostly Croatian wineries. The choice of the Plavac by Miloš winery was a good choice that enriched and paired well with the meat courses. Those who enjoy light cocktails and Spritz drinks will be happy with their offer of drinks based on sparkling wines, with fresh flavours of lime and mint. This year Rougemarin gets its second Gault&Millau toque. As it is a popular spot, make sure to book in advance.
