L'avis de Gault&Millau
On the hills of the village of Rukavac, near Matulji, an old family house that ten years ago was renovated by its owner and chef Vinko Frlan, has become one of the most famous gastronomic destinations near Opatija. The traditional rustic building has preserved the warmth of a family home. You can stay overnight or for a holiday, since they have some very nice guest rooms. The interiors are dominated by wood and warm earthy colours and the restaurant’s tables are covered with elegant white tablecloths. Outside, Stancija Kovačići is surrounded by fragrant Mediterranean plants and flowers. A spacious terrace with tables and a swimming pool enhance the pleasure. They offer food exclusively based on seasonal ingredients. The chef prepares the local and the Istrian cuisine. As entrée we ordered a duo of Boškarin tartare and Boškarin liver pâté. The meat with a fine, special taste, just like the buttery pâté with fresh homemade bread were great. We continued with some fuži (local kind of pasta) with seafood, cleaned scampi tails and dondole (sort of vongole shells). Homemade pasta with a firm texture in a very good sauce with a fresh taste of the sea. We decided to continue with fish and ordered sea bass fillets in cartoccio (fish and vegetables sealed in special baking paper and prepared in the oven). Excellent juicy fish, with a fine texture and the aroma of herbs. We finished our lunch with a delicious crostata with curd and wild berries. Moderate prices, great service, very good food. Stancija Kovačići is one of those places that you are always happy to return to, because you know that you will enjoy every single moment of your stay.
