L'avis de Gault&Millau
As this year, due to the lockdown, we couldn’t unfortunately visit the restaurant Val, we publish the review and the score by Gault&Millau Croatia 2020. In Kut, the old part of Vis, on the terrace in front of the sea, under the centuries-old palm trees, you can find the tables of restaurant Val, covered by dark blue and white tablecloths, with little lamps in the middle and other hanging from the air. The heart and soul of Val is the energetic Luce Knego, the owner and the chef of the restaurant. Born in Dubrovnik, upon returning from Italy, some 20 years ago, she settled on Vis, as she found the perfect place to make her dream come true: open a restaurant. Val’s menu is based on local specialties, with a slight influence of Italian cuisine. For starters, we tried her Komiža style focaccia, finely baked with tomato slices and salty anchovies. We then ordered one of her classic dishes: eggplant parmigiana. Presented in individual servings, so you get a kind of nice eggplant round cake with a layer of mozzarella, a layer of homemade tomato sauce, parmesan and basil leaves on your plate. The freshness of the food, and especially the ripe summer tomatoes, give the rich taste and aroma to this simple dish. Another specialty of Val restaurant is the pasta e fagioli with seafood. To the traditional Dalmatian dish with beans and cooked pasta she added seafood such as mussels, prawns and pieces of fish. A great blend of foods that delight us every time. The meal was hearty, so after that we split up a juicy and well-baked grilled sea bass and an arugula salad. Beside Luce, who keeps everything under control and visits the guests at the tables, the staff is also very friendly. The wine list is appropriate for the clientele of the yachts stationed in the nearby marina, the most frequent guests of Val.
