L'avis de Gault&Millau
Zigante was the first Istrian restaurant to specialize in truffles. It is located in the small Istrian village of Livade, at the edge of the Motovun forest. The restaurant is decorated simply, the space is elegant, the atmosphere calm and relaxing. The menu changes seasonally, but the backbone is just one food: truffles. There are a not more than a dozen of simple dishes to choose from, with the option of black or white truffles. But you must remember that you can find the white truffles only in the fall season, while black ones are available all year round. They offered us their excellent olive oil with homemade bread which, unfortunately, was a bit hard. To start they served the amuse-bouche: an aromatic creamy white cheese with truffles on a bun. A tasty bouchée just to introduce the next dish: homemade ravioli with Kvarner scampis and black truffle. First-class foods with pronounced scampi and truffle flavors softened by ravioli dough. We found delicious and interesting the beefsteak ravioli – actually a thinly sliced beefsteak stuffed with parsley cream. Then we ordered lamb chops on onion cream with seasonal vegetables and, of course, black truffles. The meat was perfectly roasted, juicy and deliciously spiced. We were a little disappointed by the pairing with seasonal vegetables, ie red beet roots, technically well prepared, but in our opinion they did not go well with the lamb. The unavoidable Zigante’s dessert is the ice cream with truffles. The elegant dishes are accompanied by a rich selection of wines with numerous local and international wines. We were there at the time of their former chef Damir Modrušan. Thanks to him Zigante has always been at the top of Istrian gastronomy. We hope that the departure of the chef will not affect the quality of the offer.
