L'avis de Gault&Millau
Mala Hiža is a restaurant located in Mačkovec, a small place four kilometres away from the city of Čakovec. In a 130 years old renovated oak house that constantly maintains the same quality from dishes and service to the wine list. Decorated in a traditional Međimurje style and with carefully designed traditional details and decorations, Mala Hiža offers a very pleasant atmosphere. Chef Branimir Tomašić, the winner of the “Traditional Chef of the Year 2018 Trophy”, has certainly justified the award. His restaurant continues to serve top dishes, prepared from local ingredients. There are mostly meat dishes on the menu, but also some fish specialties, which will satisfy even the most demanding of palates. Traditional Međimurje specialties are used as the basis for coming up with new dishes. We started our lunch with tasteful creamy soup made of white asparagus, and crispy fried rolls stuffed with the vegetables that kept their texture. The classics, fried pork fillet presented with steamed vegetables, delighted us yet again but was really plentiful. We couldn’t resist traditional local desert called Međimurska gibanica, composed of several layers of apples, cheese, nuts and poppy. Mala Hiža is a perfect place to discover simple yet top quality terroir products. A well composed wine list includes both foreign and Croatian wines.
