L'avis de Gault&Millau
Restaurant Rivica is one of the gastronomic trademarks of the island of Krk. It is located on the waterfront of Njivice, a small, pleasant island town. It is a restaurant with a family tradition almost 90 years long. In the old days we used to go to Rivica at Christmas time, for a festival dedicated to cod fish, when they offered it prepared in all possible ways. Since then, Rivica has changed a lot, but they have always been keeping a high level cuisine based on fish and seafood. We had lunch on a shady terrace overlooking the harbor, protected from passers-by. The environment and decoration of the terrace are extremely pleasant, the waiters are fast, kind, very professional and ready to give you a pertinent advice on food choices and wine pairing. We started with a glass of sparkling wine. As appetizer we took different kind of raw fish. In addition to marinated scampi tails, they offered fresh tuna, so we ordered a tartare and a masterfully sliced tuna carpaccio with wasabi cream. Everything exuded the exceptional freshness of the sea. The tartare was very balanced in spices so that no spice dominated the flavours and the scent of the fresh tuna. We were delighted by the capesante (Saint Jacques scallops). Three of them on the plate, all prepared in different way: grilled, au gratin with sesame, sprouts… We could not resist the fish Bodul soup (local people from the islands are called Boduli) - strong, clear and rich in fish meat, shrimp, mussels (dondole, large vongole)) and al dente cooked rice. The soup was simply top notch. After that, we shared the Adriatic squid caught on a peškafondo, a traditional fishing hook. They were prepared in three ways - grilled, fried and in a Port wine sauce. They were delicious. Although the wine list in Rivica offers a rich selection including some top wines, which are not easy to find in restaurants, we chose on one of their Žlahtina, an autochthonous Krk wine variety, recommended by the waiter. And it was a good choice. Rivica is great both in the selection and preparation of seafood. They experiment a lot with the cooking, which shows that they want to develop a gastronomic offer, but they still offer classics (including meat dishes such as pašticada – a meat stew - and different steaks). When you are on the island of Krk, be sure to visit them, you will enjoy their extremely fresh and well-prepared food.
