Tucked away in the quiet seaside village of Banjole, Konoba Batelina exudes a kind of charm that can’t be designed — only inherited. The ambience is traditionally rustic and simple, fully devoted to what you came for: fresh fish and honest, straightforward coastal cooking. The mixed seafood appetizer instantly reveals why Batelina has long been one of the most renowned taverns along the Istrian coast. The sardines in saor balance sweet and sour notes beautifully, while the red mullets marinated in lemon are delicate and bursting with freshness. The eel pâté is rich and surprisingly refined, and the octopus salad shows how a classic dish can be prepared with remarkable lightness and elegance. The confit of dogfish offers a tender, almost buttery meat, while the salted anchovies and vinegar-marinated big sardines stay true to the coastal simplicity that, in fact, is the hardest to achieve. The parsnip-filled raviolo in a fish-cheek sauce is an unexpected delight — a dish that gently bridges land and sea, refined and comforting, and a flawless prelude to the main course. The white fish in a white wine sauce further confirms Batelina’s core philosophy: let freshness speak, and allow the kitchen to highlight it with subtlety.
