Gault&Millau's review 2026

Boccaporta is a traditional Istrian tavern popular among the locals. Not far from the Pula marina, it is simply decorated, with an outdoor terrace and a rustic dark wood interior. It is also known for its brunches, when they offer ready-made daily dishes, such as maneštra, a traditional Istrian thick soup made of corn and different sorts of beans, lasagne, gnocchi with meat sauce, so Boccaporta is full at any time of the day. The cuisine is unpretentious, but more than correct, the portions are extremely large, and the prices are fair. Most guests come regularly and the atmosphere is pleasant and homely. The friendly waitress introduced us to the dishes, so we started our lunch with delicious grilled dondole (a variety of big clams), seasoned with just a little olive oil, and a few slices of lemon. The homemade šurlice (Istrian pasta) in a generous sauce of cuttlefish cut into strips and with porcini mushrooms were also delicious. It was a truly attractive autumn “mare e monti” combination. We especially liked the ravioli stuffed with shrimp, in a seafood sauce. After the copious portions, we couldn’t order any more the fish from the rich daily catch. They also have a good selection of mostly Istrian wines. Boccaporta is a warm tavern full of life where you will be happy to return when you crave good local food.
