Gault&Millau's review 2026

Located at the corner between the Mrtvi kanal (Dead Channel) and Porto Baroš in the center of Rijeka, this tavern got its name from its position. Typically coastal and tied to an urban port environment, it is known for simple fish dishes ideal for a quick lunch. Highly recommended are their fried calamari rings, which melt in the mouth, served with kale, as well as shark fillet with parsnip purée and umami-rich black risotto. All daily meals are offered at a single affordable price, something the owners are especially proud of, as their goal from the beginning has been to make Kvarner’s gastronomy accessible to everyone. There are also meat dishes, such as young Pag lamb with baked potatoes or lamb liver with parsnip purée. Meals end with something sweet - iconic strudel prepared right on time to be warm, or cream made from Pag sheep ricotta with fresh strawberries and blueberries. The wine list is solid, featuring mainly local Malvasia wines and some from Dalmatia. The tavern is pleasantly rustic, with friendly staff and a mix of tourists and locals.
