Gault&Millau's review 2026

At the entrance to the town of Žminj, not far from the main roundabout, there is the small Konoba Puli Pineta. Open all year round, the tavern has a rustic interior. The fire in the large fireplace warms you even in the coldest months. And you can sit on the small outdoor terrace in nice weather. Here they serve the authentic Istrian cuisine, which was set up by the founder, chef Pino Kuhar, and he was succeeded by his daughter-in-law, chef Paula Pucić, who respects the local and seasonal ingredients. The menu hasn’t change for years and it would be nice to have some variations. To start, there is an excellent platter with homemade cold cuts. Be sure to try the already praised grilled young cheese. They will serve per default the pickled mushrooms that they pick themselves. Homemade pasta is always a good choice. This time we tried the fuži with truffles. Perhaps there was a little too much sauce, so the truffle flavour was a bit lost. The fritaja (kind of frittata, or omelette) with prosciutto and asparagus was excellent. The meat dishes are also good, from classic sauces to roasted meat. Puli Pineta is a simple tavern with good homemade food and friendly staff. It has its regular guests, locals or tourists, and everyone is happy to return. They offer decent local wines, and the prices are very reasonable.
