Gault&Millau's review 2026

Among the green hills of Croatian Zagorje, thirty kilometres from Zagreb, on the road from Marija Bistrica to Gornja Stubica – lies an estate whose owners are running a restaurant, producing wines and growing fruits. As a result, most of the ingredients used in the kitchen of Lojzekova Hiža come from their own production. You will always be welcomed by friendly staff, a warm atmosphere, red traditional checkered tablecloths, and classic Zagorje specialties: Zagorje soup, roast duck, turkey, steaks with mushrooms in pumpkin seed oil and seeds, homemade sausages, and the štrukli (traditional dough) with various fillings. Lojzek’s “Zagreb-style” schnitzel is stuffed with cottage cheese and homemade smoked ham, while for Sunday lunch we recommend the pumpkin flour soup. The interior is spacious, decorated in a rustic style with traditional Zagorje motifs, photographs, and numerous awards for excellence in quality that the Grden family has collected over the years – including recognition for preserving authentic flavours and gastronomic tradition. If you wish to take home the aromas and flavours of Croatian Zagorje, you can purchase homemade cheese, jams and teas. Children will also enjoy their visit, as the estate features a beautiful large playground. We recommend reserving a table in advance, as Lojzekova Hiža is very popular throughout the year.
