Gault&Millau's review 2026

Located in the old part of Buzet, overlooking the valley and the Ćićarija mountain range, Stara Oštarija exudes rustic charm and brings the authentic aromas and flavours of the Istrian tradition. You will be greeted kindly, and the owner will personally serve you at your table. The menu is dedicated to local recipes – from the trout on Buzet way, the homemade pasta and mushroom dishes, to the entire seasonal truffle menu. The wine selection is modest, and they serve by the glass only a Malvasia and a Teran from a single producer. To start, we ordered the cold carpaccio of beef steak. Although the carpaccio was stated to be cold, we did not expect it to be almost frozen. It is a shame, because the meat lost the expected flavour. Among the pasta dishes, the ravioli with an excellent sauce made from fresh and perfectly prepared mushrooms stands out, while the trout fillet on a Buzet way was generous, perfectly cooked and exceptionally juicy. The truffle here is served fresh, which is why the restaurant proudly bears the label tartufo vero. It can be tasted in both savoury and sweet combinations – and our choice fell on the warm Buzet cake with a white truffle. Warning: it’s filling for two! The combination of the warm cake and the intense aroma of truffles is a true rhapsody of flavours – the kind you’d expect from a place that truly respects local ingredients.
