Gault&Millau's review 2026

Located in a renovated manor house in the Zelina region, Taverna exudes warmth and rustic charm. At the first glance it is clear that this is a place to enjoy authentic homemade cuisine prepared with local ingredients. The gastronomic offer is diverse - from goulash, pork knuckle, tripe, and homemade sausages for lunch, to à la carte dishes that satisfy both meat lovers and vegetarians. If you are ready for a hearty meal, start with a platter of homemade cured meats and cheeses. Alternatively, try the homemade tomato soup, which - following the waiter’s advice to season it with a few drops of spicy sriracha - gains an entirely new and surprisingly pleasant note. Pljukanci pasta with truffles from nearby forests and grilled meat sourced from local farms are among the house specialties, as are their large, juicy burgers. If you still have room for dessert, warm blueberry strudel with vanilla perfectly rounds off the meal. The wine list features labels from the surrounding vineyards, and for a non-alcoholic refreshment, they serve excellent homemade apple juice from a nearby family farm. Portions are more than generous, prices moderate, parking is available, and the waitstaff exemplify relaxed professionalism and genuine hospitality. Whether visiting in summer or winter, be sure to reserve a table.
