Although quite far from the city centre, as it is located at the foot hills of Sljeme, in the northern part of Zagreb, and can only be reached by car, the Wirtshaus restaurant, named after the nearby cable car, is almost always full. Many of the guests have become regulars. They like the pleasant ambiance and the Austrian dishes – the bases of Zagreb’s cuisine – offered at affordable prices. The charming decor, the relaxed atmosphere and the personnel contribute to a pleasant experience, and the owner is cordial with everyone who comes. The classic Austrian Tafelspitz, boiled beef, is served in a pot with soup and vegetables, and on the side you will get the apple and horseradish sauce, the spinach cream and the mashed potatoes. Wiener schnitzel lovers will get their money’s worth here: two pieces of breaded veal, with a golden-yellow crust, were so large that we immediately saved one on the side and took it home. The breaded chicken is also excellent, actually pieces of half a chicken served in a basket. And as a side dish, you can also order the potato salad seasoned with a little too much vinegar. Specific dishes include veal goulash with homemade dumplings, in a thick cream sauce, and the famous Zwiebelrostbraten, a roast beef with crispy onions served with mashed potatoes. In addition to all the meat dishes, they also have an offer for vegetarians and vegans. The wine list has a large selection of Austrian wines and sparkling wines, as well as Croatian labels. The beer selection is especially rich. At the end of our filling meal, we still couldn’t resist the baked apples with cranberries sauce and vanilla ice cream. Wirtshaus brought back the flavours of childhood for us, as well as for many Zagreb residents.
