Cheese dairy When their parents announced they could no longer manage the family dairy farm, siblings Katarina and Ivan Gašić - then in their twenties - made a bold decision. Instead of leaving Slavonia in search of work abroad, they secured a loan to preserve the farm in the Vuka River valley. She was barely 27 years old and her brother Ivan was five years younger. With backgrounds in agronomy and agricultural education, they successfully expanded operations to 50 hectares and opened a dairy in 2017. Today, they produce 13 varieties of cheese from Simmental cow’s milk, using robotic milking systems. Their range includes semi-hard cheeses, cooked cheeses with herbs such as dill, pumpkin seeds and chives, cheese with ground red pepper, and traditional škripavac. Katarina - an agricultural engineer - oversees production, while Ivan - named Croatia’s best young farmer in 2018 - focuses on the land. Their days begin at dawn, but the rewards, they say, are well worth the effort.
