Croatian EVOO - Part two

Discover our selection of 20 Croatian extra-virgin olive oils, listed by alphabetical order. Every week we present 5 of them.

FAUSTINA

FAUSTINA is an organic multi-varietal extra virgin olive oil obtained by selecting and blending carefully the olives of Oblica, Leccino and Pendolino varieties. The oil has a light green colour, it is exceptionally fruity and has a well-balanced bitterness and spiciness. The aroma is fresh with green grass, while the taste is a complex blend of green notes of almonds and artichokes.

Faustina goes well with hard cheeses, shrimp carpaccio and desserts based on white chocolate.

The family farm - OPG Josip Kulaš is located in Polača, Ravni Kotari, and is engaged in the organic production of olive oils. It has 2,500 olive trees on 10 hectares of land. The domestic Oblica variety predominates in the olive grove, while the other varieties are Leccino, Pendolino and Cipressino.

Faustina olive oil has received the highest awards in domestic and international competitions for many years, which confirms the continuity of the quality of this organic producer.

MATE Olive Oil

An organic, extra virgin olive oil blended from the Leccino and Pendolino varieties, MATE TRASPARENZA MARINA oil has a green, it is intensely fruity, and has an exceptionally harmonious balance of bitterness and spiciness. The aroma is dominated by green almonds and aromatic herbs, and the taste by artichokes and broad beans, so this complex and powerful olive oil leaves an impression of freshness and elegance.

Mate Trasparenza marina oil is the best addition to fresh tuna dishes or porcini risotto, and when used with dessert, it will ideally complement the almond semifreddo.

The trees from which the fruits are harvested and from which these exceptionally high-quality olive oils are produced are located on the coast, between the Dajla Bay and the Savudrija Cape. The organic olive grove of the Vekić family covers 70 hectares of land where they planted  27,000 trees of the introduced varieties Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino, and the indigenous varieties Buža, Istarska Bjelica, and Carbonazza.

Olives are harvested by hand and processed in their oil mill, just a few hours after harvesting, in order to preserve all desirable organoleptic properties. The Vekić family produces several types of single-varietal oils and a multi-varietal one and their top quality is confirmed by the highest score in the prestigious Flos Olei olive oil guide.

MENEGHETTI

MENEGHETTI LECCINO is a single-varietal extra virgin olive oil of the Leccino variety. The oil has a green-gold colour, with an intense fruity flavour reminiscent of green, freshly cut grass. The taste has a pleasant medium-intense bitterness and spiciness, interspersed with a green palette of legumes and green tomatoes.

MONTE ROSSO

MONTE ROSSO GRAND SELECTION PLATINUM single-variety extra virgin olive oil is produced from hand-picked and selected Istrian olives. It has a dark green colour, intense fruitiness, pleasantly pronounced bitterness and intense spiciness. The aroma is dominated by green olive leaves, and the taste by green almonds, green beans and aromatic herbs. All the flavours and aromas in this fantastic oil are excellently balanced.

Monte Rosso Grand Selection Platinum oil can be paired perfectly with tuna carpaccio, truffle risotto and creamy chocolate ice cream.

The Monte Rosso estate is located in the Northwestern part of Istria, in the village of Crveni vrh, not far from Savudrija, and their olive grove covers 40 hectares, with plantations of 14,000 trees that are gradually in full production. NEGRI OLIVE

NEGRI multi-varietal extra virgin olive oil is made from indigenous Istrian varieties, Buža, Istrian Bjelica and Italian varieties Leccino and Pendolino. The oil has a golden green colour, with a very intense fruity aroma of green olives and freshly cut grass. The taste is dominated by green almonds, pine nuts and floral notes interwoven with an exceptionally pleasant bitterness and spiciness.

Negri oil goes well with swordfish and greater amberjack carpaccio, salted anchovies and almond and pear tart.

Negri Olive cultivates over 7,000 olive trees in the Labin area.
