Kamenice - Gault&Millau Best POP Place of the Year 2020

The Gundulic Poljana in the heart of the old town has been home to the Kamenica Tavern for decades. Her menu is barely changing, but it doesn't bother most of the visiting guests: they come here to enjoy fresh, open, meaty shells, served on ice trays and seasoned with just the smell of sea and lemon juice. This delicacy is delivered to one of Dubrovnik's most established restaurants from the nearby Bay of Mali Ston, a traditional shellfish farming area where only two types of shellfish are grown: mussels and oysters. It is estimated that around half a million pieces of oysters and about a thousand tons of mussels are grown annually, which brings significant revenue to professional growers. Oysters are the most ripe and tasty in March, and they are offered constantly by the favourite Dubrovnik restaurant, and are usually ordered as cold appetizers. And although there are other dishes on the menu - from pasta and seafood risotto to quick omelettes and salads, it is the shells that are most sought after. A lot of guests visiting Dubrovnik do not miss going to Kamenice Restaurant, but getting a spot on the terrace overlooking the small town market is always a challenge. Only there you feel like you are in the most beautiful theatre with live scenes: at the same time you feel like  in the middle of the theatre watching the events around you, and already in the second you are an actor enjoying delicious snacks while others are watching you. Everything here is authentic: interior decor, retro chairs and tables, bustling but friendly waiters, and most of all - oysters. This cult place resists all the culinary trends of modern gastronomy, and thanks to just one but top quality ingredient, they have been able to sustain themselves for decades. That's why Oysters has the Best POP 2020 trophy.
