The Istrian version of Agli Amici, the restaurant of the famous Italian chef Emanuele Scarello, is located within the Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, in one of the most beautiful locations in the town, right next to the promenade by the sea, with a view of the harbour and the islet of St. Katarina. The interior and the spacious terrace are decorated in a modern way, airy and elegant. The atmosphere is intimate, but warm and cheerful. The personnel are very professional and friendly, and well-versed in serving you. During our visit, Agli Amici offered two seven-course menus – Rovinj, based on seafood specialties, and Istria, dominated by meat and vegetable ingredients typical of the Istrian terroir. The dinner began with diverse and creative greetings from the kitchen. We especially liked the juicy and creamy green pancake with Mediterranean herbs and Italian Calvisius caviar. The Rovinj menu opened with the sweet-and-bitter dish Under the Sea – a scallop carpaccio, served with radish leaves, flowers, on seawater and with beurre blanc with coral. The cuttlefish and grouper were a particular surprise. The grilled cuttlefish with citrus and pepper, was decorated with gold leaf and served with tartare with cocoa, garum and aloe vera. While the crispy grouper fillet with tamarind, Swiss chard and capers was accompanied by grilled grouper collar with apricot barbecue sauce. Both dishes are a true wealth of flavours and textures. We rounded off the rich feast with refreshing, acidulous desserts. We still remember the flavours of tonka crème brûlée with carrot, ginger and citrus sorbet. They pay a lot of attention to the presentation of the dishes, which are attractive for both the palate and the eye. The wine list is extensive and expertly composed with wine labels from Croatian regions and foreign wineries. Using local ingredients, chef Scarello pushes the boundaries and offers to his guests an unusual and memorable experience.
