Gault&Millau's review 2026

Baltazar is one of those legendary Zagreb restaurants that have maintained for years high standards in terms of quality of the food. Located in a spacious courtyard, near Kaptol and the city centre, Baltazar has a separate bar area and a large dining hall divided in two parts. In nice weather the tables are placed among the large rose bushes and other greenery in the beautiful outdoor garden. The interior is pleasant and warm, with the characteristics of national restaurants. Most of the dishes they offer belong to traditional local cuisine, from Zagorje štrukli (dough filled with cheese boiled or baked) to pljeskavica (grilled minced meat flat patty) and roasted pork knuckle, but their kitchen prepares as well excellent fish dishes, depending on the daily supply of fresh fish and seafood. The focus is always on first-class seasonal ingredients. Their frittata with wild asparagus is one of the best in Zagreb. We tasted an excellent risotto with scampi, perfectly cooked al dente, creamy and with lots of cleaned scampi tails. The grilled sea bass was juicy, while the meat retained its firm structure. As always, the lamb patty was excellent. This is their specialty that is always on the menu. At Baltazar you can get a Wagyu or Black Angus steak, but also the neck of the Slavonian black pig or the roasted lamb from the Croatian region of Lika that their many regular guests come for. One of the restaurant’s main assets is the extremely friendly and efficient staff that welcomes you and accompanies you throughout the entire meal. Last year, they more than deservedly won the Gault&Millau Chef de Cuisine and Service trophy. Equally valuable is their rich and attractive wine list. Baltazar is an essential stop on the Zagreb gastronomic scene.
