Gault&Millau's review 2026

About a half-hour drive from Osijek, toward the heart of Baranja lies the ethno village of Karanac, home to Baranjska kuća – an unmissable gastronomic destination. Witty menu features dishes with playful names such as Drunken Pig and Lazy daughter-in-law. The former refers to pork tenderloin stuffed with fresh cheese and dried plums in a plum brandy sauce, while the latter is a cake made from moistened strudel dough and cheese. At Baranjska kuća, they use their own ingredients or those sourced from nearby family farms, of which they prepare traditional dishes. With prior notice, you can taste beans slowly cooked in an earthenware pot, hearty pheasant or oxtail soup, Baranja-style lamb from a wood-fired oven, slow-roasted wild hare, or roasted duck with nettle thin dried flatbread. New additions to the menu are slow-cooked black pig cheeks with celeriac purée, in a sauce of stone fruit and root vegetables. The most delicious Danube trio – pike perch, carp, and catfish – is prepared there in countless ways, and with every dish you can sample wines from renowned Baranja wineries or the wine from their own cellar. Desserts are traditional sweets of the region, ranging from plum dumplings and taške (traditional rolled dough with fillings) to Dobos cake with 14 layers. Baranjska kuća is located on the “Street of Forgotten Time,” a kind of open-air museum of old crafts that brings former workshops back to life – those of weavers, carpenters, coopers, clog makers, blacksmiths, and barbers.
