Gault&Millau's review 2026

Bistro Beška is quietly but steadily shaping Čakovec’s contemporary gastronomic scene. Legendary tavern was named after its founder, Jelisaveta Horvat, known as Beška. Family – run bistro over 60 years has changed its name and identity but never its essence – the warmth of Međimurje, hospitality, and an important role in the city’s cultural life. Nowadays it is a place where young chef Ines Jurišić transforms seasonal local ingredients into precisely executed, visually striking dishes blending the flavours of tradition and innovation. The lovely decorated bistro radiates a homely atmosphere, while the charming green terrace and garden complete the experience. It is equally suitable for a relaxed daytime meal or a more intimate dinner, and the menu depends on ingredients availability. Although not extensive, the offer includes hearty breakfasts, meat and fish main courses, and imaginative desserts. We recommend trying the handmade cappelletti filled with smoked trout and porcini mushrooms, served in a sparkling wine sauce and topped with trout roe. Equally delicious is the duck confit, served with pak choi, buckwheat and fermented lemon cream, sprinkled with buckwheat popcorn. The lemon tart, set on a whiskey-infused meringue and dusted with pine needle powder, is a dessert you’ll want to eat again. The wine list is carefully curated, with an emphasis on winemakers from Međimurje, complemented by craft beers, homemade teas, and freshly squeezed juices. Beška is a place where past and present meet on the plate – a restaurant you will want to return to.
