Gault&Millau's review 2026

If you are a fan of traditional Istrian cuisine and a charming, authentic ambiance, we recommend visiting the Borghetto restaurant in the picturesque village of Bale. It is located in a stone house with a large green terrace. The interior is dominated by stone and wood, and a lot of attention has been paid to details that reflect the style of the place. The lamps and blankets that decorate the terrace make Borghetto a romantic oasis of peace. There are four three-course menus on offer: Valle, Borghetto, Terra and Mare. We tried the Borghetto menu, which opens with a traditional Istrian plate - a selection of local salami, prosciutto and cheese. This was followed by the juicy Borghetto pork medallions, braised with prosciutto and porcini mushrooms and served with handmade Istrian pljukanci (sort of pasta). For dessert, we tried the house tiramisù. We also recommend trying the fuži with truffles or the braised squid in a pan with polenta. By the way, at Borghetto, the bread and pasta are always fresh, they are handmade every day. The wine list is not extensive, but it offers quality labels from Istrian vineyards. The personnel are friendly, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. These are the main reasons why guests happily return to this small Istrian oasis.
