Gault&Millau's review 2026

In recent years, some places have emerged on the gastronomic map of Split that you simply have to come and eat. They are on the wish list of both domestic and foreign guests. One of these gastronomic destinations is Corto Maltese. On the pedestrian but very busy Obrov street, right next to the fish market, in the old town centre, the restaurant has been operating successfully for a long time. The pleasant staff, always smiling and dedicated to each guest, will be happy to give you a recommendation for the dish of the day. The aromas of the summer Dalmatian specialty - stuffed peppers - spread from the kitchen. And our recommendation for those who haven’t tried it yet is to try the famous smoked shrimp risotto. We like to come here the most for an early lunch, because it’s very difficult to get a free seat later in the day if you haven’t made a reservation. With the help of the waitress, without much thought, we decide on a dish with the humorous name Mr. Bean hummus, a bean version of the popular Arabic chickpea spread, and Wicked tuna pâté. The light appetizer served on a plate with homemade bread and olive oil is colourful and tempting, decorated with edible flowers. A true summer treat. It’s a shame that the main ingredients, beans and tuna, didn’t come to the fore in both spreads. Corto Maltese has a good selection of local wines, delicious cocktails and, for the summer heat, juices made from local syrups flavoured with various Dalmatian spices and herbs.
