Gault&Millau's review 2026

The rustic look and the traditional Baranja cuisine are the main characteristics of the restaurant Darócz located in the small village of Vardarac, in the northern part of Osijek-Baranja County. The population is mixed – Croatian and Hungarian - which have a strong influence on the local gastronomy. In Hungarian Darócz is a rooster, so a statue of huge wooden one stands in front of the restaurant. You can eat at the large covered terrace, or in traditional, warm interior with many decorations that testify to the rich history of this region. Darócz is known for its fresh fish from their own pool, poultry and game dishes, as well as good homemade brandy. The most popular dish among guests is the fish stew (fiš paprikaš), cooked in kettles on an open fire. With an appealing aroma and a dark red sauce of velvety texture due to the red paprika, the fish stew is spicy as it should be and full of flavours, with large pieces of fish and homemade pasta. They also prepare the perch fillet and the famous carp in forks (put on wooden sticks and roasted over an open fire), the dish that should be ordered in advance. Just like the extraordinary roast duck with offal and apple stuffing, served with sweet and sour apple sauce and baked potatoes, all from the bread oven. For dessert you can get the delicious plum dumplings, Dobos tart or the baked pancakes with cheese. The wine list is modest, but focused on Baranja wines. Darócz is one of the most popular local restaurants, once you visit it - you will definitely come back.
