Gault&Millau's review 2026

Gabrek is an institution. It originally began almost a hundred years ago as a butcher shop and tavern, and through several generations, it has remained family-owned and established itself as a synonym for authentic Samobor gastronomy. It is located beneath the walls of the Old Town of Samobor, along the Gradna stream and close to the famous Vugrinščak promenade. They offer traditional continental dishes based on local ingredients, often prepared according to old recipes used by this hospitality family for decades. From the extensive menu, several classics stand out. Mushrooms are their forte: they prepare a famous mushroom soup served with homemade cornbread; mushrooms sautéed with sauce; breaded Parisian-style mushrooms with sauce; mushrooms served with breaded brain; with roast veal; and in various sauces. It is also worth mentioning once-working-class dishes - tripe with bacon and stewed liver – which have formed the backbone of the menu for decades. Their pancakes are legendary, offered with a large selection of fillings - more than 40 options! Portions at Gabrek are generous, and the atmosphere is warm - ideal for lunch or dinner with family or friends, or as part of a visit to the romantic town of Samobor. Despite constant busyness, the waiters are friendly and attentive. The restaurant has its own parking and capacity for larger groups.
