Gault&Millau's review 2026

The ambiance of Restaurant Gonar, located on a slightly elevated position above the sea, can best be described as idyllic and typically Mediterranean. With panoramic views of the bay and a calm, almost rural setting, guests feel far from tourist crowds. However, the kitchen is always busy, as Gonar is one of the island’s more popular spots and is open year-round. The atmosphere is relaxed, enhanced by simple interior décor with motifs from Rab’s past and an equally simple terrace, which is the restaurant’s main attraction, offering stunning sunset views alongside an authentic gastronomic experience. A key element is the olive oil produced by the Dumičić family, used in all dishes. Gonar is known for traditional “peka” cooking (under a bell-shaped lid), especially octopus prepared in various ways: under the peka, dried with eggs or polenta, with pasta, or a salad style. It is also a great place to try Rab-style brodet (made from several types of daily catch fish), as well as lamb or veal under the peka. We recommend ending your lunch or dinner with Rab cake, a traditional not too sweet dessert. Its lace-like dough highlights almonds, with hints of maraschino, lemon, and orange. Gonar is far away from a fine dining restaurant, but it’s honest, straightforward cuisine is exactly what guests appreciate.
