Gault&Millau's review 2026

Lamb, game, fish, and especially scampi are the strengths of Cres cuisine, and the same applies to this tavern, which has carried the name Belona since World War II. The Stolnik family took over in the late 1970s, preserving both the name and the culinary tradition. The cuisine is simple and focused on the quality of ingredients rather than technical complexity. Everything is prepared with care—from bolognese and sautéed liver to baked fish, Cres lamb, or more modern dishes such as rump steak in Istrian Teran wine and honey sauce with sweet potato and carrot purée. Seafood dishes include scampi buzara, crab, octopus salad, pasta with shellfish, black risotto, and gregada. Lunch is served between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., featuring simple dishes like favourite one - fried small fish with potato salad. The wine selection is modest but thoughtfully curated, focusing mainly on Croatian wines from Istria and Slavonia.
