Gault&Millau's review 2026

A reliable address for lovers of authentic Cres lamb is the Bukaleta tavern in Loznati, where the Kučica family has been nurturing the tradition of preparing dishes from this island delicacy for decades. The archaic atmosphere is enhanced by the well-maintained rustic interior with antique details, among which neatly arranged bukalete (baked clay goblets) and a large hearth take centre stage. For most of the year, guests can sit on the covered terrace, which provides much-needed shade in summer. The kitchen consistently honours the gastronomic symbol of the island of Cres, and the menu is unpretentious. It features lamb pâtés and soups, lamb goulash with pasta, as well as traditional koradele served with polenta. Particularly delicious is the lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven with roasted potatoes, while the indecisive may opt for the Bukaleta trio, which also includes breaded lamb. Other types of meat are available, and there are vegetarian dishes as well. For dessert, we recommend olito, an ancient local sweet made with dried figs and raisins enriched with sheep suet. Bukaleta is one of the few places where this delicacy can still be tasted, rounded off with excellent homemade rakia. Reserving a table is advisable, as it is usually fully booked regardless of the day of the week, season, or weather. The friendly and unobtrusive personnel always ensure that guests feel welcome.
