With a tradition of over 90 years, Purger is one of the oldest restaurants in the city centre, known for its good, affordable, classic local food. It is very popular with locals and foreigners living in Zagreb, so it is always full for lunch, but it is easier to find a place for dinner. Guests can sit inside or, in the summer, on the large terrace in the courtyard. The menu is very extensive and in several languages, with an emphasis on meat dishes, but vegetarians will not be disappointed. The fish menu includes fresh trout and sea bream on the grill. The fried squid are excellent, and on Fridays you can get their famous cod stew. Daily dishes in autumn and winter are always sarma (sour cabbage leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice), boiled buncek (smoked pork shank) with sauerkraut and excellent blood sausages, stuffed peppers, delicious boiled veal, beans with smoked sausage and the famous tripe (fileki). We recommend their spit-roasted duck and the roast veal. The breaded Vienna and Zagreb steaks are impressively large and exquisitely prepared, and the veal is incredibly tender and delicious, so that it can be cut with a fork. The portions are generous, and the price includes a side dish of your choice. Pancakes are the dessert that most regulars will choose. Among the variety of fillings try the pancakes with chocolate and/or walnuts with a fantastic wine sauce. The thick, not very sweet foamy wine sauce (chateau) is served in a bowl, from which guests always scrape the last spoonful. This is a restaurant where people mostly drink beer or local wine.
