Gault&Millau's review 2026

Located outside the city centre, Izakaya stands out as a gastronomic oasis where Japanese tradition meets contemporary foodie trends. Although the name in Japan means a relaxed bar with small dishes and drinks, this is not entirely the case here – the portions are very satisfying, and the ambiance is decorated with care that combines minimalist Japanese lines and the comfort of a modern space. You should definitely come here if you want to taste authentic Japanese cuisine. The feeling of umami warmth is already present in the miso soup. Classic sushi is executed flawlessly and you don’t want to miss it here, from nigiri combinations with salmon, tuna or prawns, to hosomaki, uramaki and futomaki rolls. The gyoza, which they have in pork, chicken or veggie versions, are made very precisely and consistently, and are cooked just enough to retain juiciness, then fried for the ideal texture. At the end try the fantastic desserts from Torteria Macaron that they make especially for the restaurant. The drink’s list is equally impressive, with a diverse beer selection, a fairly long wine list, and a wide selection of the most important Croatian varieties, as well as famous wines from around the world. A dozen or so cocktails based on local classics and authentic drinks like sake satisfy every taste, and are well-balanced and refreshing. Special credit should be given to the waiters who go through the menu with equal enthusiasm and knowledge, explaining the ingredients, and suggesting the perfect drink to accompany each dish. Izakaya is a pleasant and desirable place for a serious business lunch, an intimate dinner, as well as for smaller family celebrations. Reservations are recommended.
