High ceilings with decorative reliefs, views of green landscapes through large windows, and charming details such as a music box create the atmosphere of an early 20th-century bourgeois apartment in this favourite restaurant of Karlovac locals. Yet at Kalvarija – about a ten-minute drive from the city centre – they strive to cook in a modern way, even though their inspiration comes from traditional dishes. To start, you might order ajngemahtes prepared in grandmother’s style or a thick porcini mushroom soup made in the Italian manner. Meat lovers can choose very tasteful “Branimir” – a veal round steak stuffed with cheese and cooked ham, grilled and served with porcini cream sauce and homemade gnocchi. “Kalvarija,” on the other hand, is a turkey steak stuffed with sautéed porcini mushrooms and served with vegetables. With beefsteak, you can select a sauce – green pepper, gorgonzola, or porcini mushrooms. The menu also features sous vide smoked chicken wings with fries, as well as confit veal shank served with baked polenta and enriched with gorgonzola. The wine list at this small family-run restaurant includes a wide selection of Croatian labels, and they are also known for wheat and dark beers.
