Gault&Millau's review 2026

Kantinon is a spacious restaurant located on the coast at the end of Rovinj’s port, in a former wine cellar with high vaults and brick walls. The rustic interior, with solid wooden tables and a large bar behind which you can see the kitchen, creates a warm and unobtrusively elegant ambiance. The outdoor terrace with a view of Rovinj further emphasizes the Mediterranean character of the space. The restaurant is open all year round, offering traditional Istrian flavours in a modern, simple interpretation. We started the meal with juicy mussels on buzara in a marine sauce seasoned to measure and completing the main ingredient. As a main fish dish, we chose the turbot al cartoccio (cooked in a paper bag), served with potatoes, capers and olives, carefully baked so that the meat remained juicy, while the flavours of the Mediterranean ingredients harmoniously intertwined. We also tried the pljukanci (Istrian pasta) with mushrooms and black truffles - a dish with a clear structure and balanced flavours, but in our opinion, there were not enough mushrooms. We didn’t wait too much. The dishes were served hot and met our expectations. The service is professional and unobtrusive, and a selection of Istrian wines, especially Malvazija available by the glass, accompanies the menu. Although Kantinon is not an original Istrian tavern, it is a restaurant that offers a correct cuisine and a pleasant ambience, suitable for a relaxed but gastronomically rounded meal in Rovinj.
