Gault&Millau's review 2026

Hidden among vineyards and olive groves in the hills above the village of Žrnovo, Konoba Maha offers a taste of rural Korčula far from the bustle of the coast. Run by the Marelić family, the restaurant combines rustic surroundings, traditional cooking and local wines to create an experience deeply connected to the island’s landscape. At the heart of the kitchen is the bell, a traditional cooking method in which meat, fish or vegetables slowly roast under an iron bell covered with glowing embers. Lamb, veal, chicken or octopus prepared this way must be ordered in advance, but the result is intensely flavorful. Starters include beef tartare with sun-dried tomatoes and truffle emulsion, shrimp or vegetable carpaccio, and warm dishes such as soparnik and Žrnovo macaroni served with goat-cheese pesto, wild fennel, sun-dried tomatoes and toasted almonds. Herbs grown in the garden flavour both dishes and cocktails, while most ingredients come from small island producers. The wine list focuses on Dalmatian varieties such as Pošip, Grk and Dubrovnik Malvasia.
