Wooden tables, warm lighting and the stone vaults of the old wine cellar are part of the charm of the Konoba Ma:Toni, in Split’s Bačvice, across from Hotel Briig. A few years ago they introduced a new menu, with a variety of appealing dishes, but their main asset is still top quality grilled meats, which are grilled on a special wood and charcoal grill. We especially liked the possibility of sharing dishes that mostly fall under the category of appetizers or as they call them, like in Spanish, tapas or pinchos. The variety of colourful plates that arrived on the table was extremely tempting and we wanted to try everything, from the delicious Spanish prosciutto and other cold cuts, to beef tartare, from tuna tataki in mango gravy, with teriyaki sauce and sesame to the delicious cod fritters. We also shared the generous portion of the beef stew in red wine with fresh porcini mushrooms and homemade gnocchi. This left room for us to sample the premium Black Angus ćevapčići (small rolled patties of minced meat), made from juicy and perfectly seasoned meat, with a side of baked potatoes, ajvar (spicy spread made of roasted peppers and eggplants) and kajmak (clottered cream). Then we had the huge, aged Galician rib eye steak with the bone, superbly roasted over an open fire. The wine list of the Ma:Toni tavern includes the best labels of Croatian wines, which are mostly offered by the glass. There is also a wide selection of other drinks, from craft beers to various gins, whiskeys and cognacs. This is a place that we highly recommend.
