Gault&Millau's review 2026

The picturesque village of Vrisnik, nestled in the scenic hinterland of Jelsa, is one of the most charming spots in the interior of Hvar. Its landscape is defined by stone houses that rise in cascading tiers up the hillside, crowned by the Church of St. Anthony Abbot, giving the village a distinctive silhouette. At the foot of this harmonious setting lies the family-run Konoba Vrisnik, one among the most popular restaurants in this part of the island for over two decades. The entrance, framed by vibrant bougainvillea, immediately conveys a sense of warmth, as if stepping into a family gathering. The hosts Andro and Prošper Grgičević welcome the guests with genuine hospitality. Mrs. Julija’s kitchen remains faithful to the clear, rich flavours of traditional Dalmatian cuisine. A large hearth at the centre of the garden signals the heart of the menu: peka (food baked under the bell), freshly grilled fish, and meats cooked over open flame. Mediterranean classics are also well represented, with specialties such as octopus stew, pašticada, and various buzara dishes, complemented by a wine list highlighting labels from Hvar’s vineyards. Through the dedicated work of the Grgičević family, Konoba Vrisnik stands as a prime example of the authentic Dalmatian konoba, combining traditional, high quality cuisine with attentive, polished service.
