Gault&Millau's review 2026

The terrace of the Kukuriku restaurant, in front of the hotel of the same name, is one of the most beautiful in Kvarner. Surrounded by the medieval town of Kastav and its picturesque streets, it creates a special fine dining atmosphere day and night. For almost three decades, the restaurant’s owner, Nenad Kukurin (Chef of modern traditional cuisine 2023), has been guided by the same philosophy: that top quality ingredients should not be forced to unnecessary heat treatments because they are best in their original form. He procures most of them from local fishermen, truffle hunters, butchers and fruit and vegetable growers, so it is not uncommon to meet him early in the morning with bags full of fresh catch. A pioneer of fine dining in Croatia, he insists on respecting seasonality, so Kukuriku never fails to serve wild asparagus to guests in the spring - from cream soup with a spoon dumpling of whipped cream and Parmesan, to risotto and homemade pasta with asparagus. Autumn belongs to boletus, as well to fettuccine with freshly grated black truffle - the pinnacle of the richness of simplicity. A selection of small fish appetizers lightly seasoned with citrus is a good introduction to any feast, whether you choose a fish or meat main course. The sea bass fillet is impeccably baked, as is the tender lamb fillet, both are served on plates with accompanying side dishes, they look like an art work. Don’t miss the dessert, especially the flambéed figs or the lemon sorbet. Young restaurant staff is very professional and helpful, well-versed in the menu and the wine list, which offers more than a hundred labels.
