Gault&Millau's review 2026

In the old Istrian town of Bale, not far from Vodnjan, there is a charming family hotel La Grisa with a restaurant of the same name. The small, modern and simply decorated restaurant has a lovely terrace for the summer months, actually an inner courtyard where they set up the tables. The cuisine is simple and traditional. It follows the trends of modern gastronomy in the presentation of the dishes, but there are no big surprises on the menu. They pay special attention to the quality of the ingredients, and in almost every dish they serve the excellent vegetables organically grown in their garden. They also have their own extra virgin olive oil, which they serve with attractive homemade bread. The staff are professional and friendly, and on the wine list there are some excellent Istrian wines, often from lesser-known but top-notch winemakers. Try their celery soup with truffles, with a fresh taste and tempting aroma. The homemade gnocchi with truffles are also delicious. The small gnocchi, cooked just long enough to keep a firm texture, in a fine, light black truffle sauce are an ideal starter. Just like the beef tartare, perfectly seasoned with the addition of pieces of pickled red onion and a small butter crumble. La Grisa is the right place for those who want a consistent, good quality kitchen, based on essential culinary principles.
