Gault&Millau's review 2026

The charming bistro, located next to the Esplanade Hotel, decorated in an art deco style, attracts the guests for several reasons. It is an integral part of the city’s most prestigious hotel, it is pleasant to socialize throughout the day. They serve delicious, beautifully presented food and good wines by the glass and the service is very good. Few restaurants in the city change seasonal ingredients on their menu as often as Le Bistro does. Its chef, Ana Grgić Tomić (Chef of the Year Gault&Millau Croatia 2022), is also the head chef of the Esplanade’s other restaurant, Zinfandel’s, and despite this, she does not lack creativity. Guided by the principle “the season is always the best guide”, she constantly changes and upgrades the à la carte menu. During the holidays, at the end of the year, they offered smoked prawns, combined with quince and chili jam, porcini croquettes with sunflower seed pesto and crispy crackling crumble, warm chestnut cream soup with hazelnut mousse. The baked cod fillet in a fine herb crust was excellent, and the gingerbread and tangerine sabayon tart was full of aroma. As soon as the first wild asparagus appear, Le Bistro prepares them in soup, risotto, as a side dish for sea bass fillet. Strawberries bring new inspiration and so on, always with at least one new flavour. But some dishes are always the same and that’s why the guests come back. These are the legendary štrukli (a traditional savoury pastry filled with cottage cheese, eggs and sour cream), the Wiener schnitzel (breaded veal steack) and the steak tartare served French-style, with fries. The price-quality ratio is attractive.
