Gault&Millau's review 2026

Restaurant Obala marks the 90th anniversary, a milestone that celebrates not only its long history but also the generations who shaped it. The story began in 1936, when founder Mada Frka served fish and simple homemade dishes to visitors on the terrace of her stone house by the waterfront in Lopud. Today the restaurant is run by her grandson, Ivo Frka. In an era when gastronomy is constantly evolving, Obala remains faithful to what makes it special: simple, honest cuisine, a beautiful sea view, and a welcoming atmosphere. Fresh seafood, olive oil, seasonal vegetables, and traditional recipes create flavours that keep guests returning year after year. Their warm focaccia and homemade bread are unforgettable – served with olive oil and lightly scented with Mediterranean herbs, perfect for sharing. A standout starter is fresh Adriatic tuna tartare served with creamy avocado and tomato. Another popular option is a platter showcasing both continental and Dalmatian flavors of Croatia, including Drniš prosciutto, Slavonian kulen, cheeses, and olives. Among the main dishes, grilled octopus served with creamy polenta and fresh tomato salsa is particularly appealing. The highlight is sea bass baked in a crust of coarse salt, served with the ceremonial cracking of the salt shell. Don’t miss traditional Lopud’s pancakes with sugar and lemon. Wine list is extensive, featuring labels from across Croatia as well as several excellent sparkling wines.
