Gault&Millau's review 2026

The Slavonian Ana Uremović Longobardi and her husband, the Italian Pasquale Longobardi, run an excellent Zagreb pizzeria in the northern part of the city, which offers classics of Italian cuisine – made from Italian and seasonal Croatian ingredients. Their quality gets better every year. You go to Papavero when you want to eat a real pizza contemporanea – a modern version of napoletana, made from very light and crispy dough with a high airy edge and a leopard spotted crust. In addition to pizza, they also make very good Italian panuozzo sandwiches, as well as large pizzas on trays that are great for sharing. And their pasta dishes are just as good, if not better. They make it by hand, according to a proven recipe – ravioli filled with ricotta and bacon, tagliatelle and lasagne, gnocchi. An excellent appetizer is the gnocco fritto, or Italian “torn pants” which they serve with mozzarella and prosciutto or mozzarella and kulen (Slavonina flavoured hot sausage similar to chorizo). The burgers served in homemade brioche buns are impressive, made with Croatian beef and BBQ sauce, and accompanied by a seasonal salad. Every Wednesday there is a special offer when you get two burgers for the price of one – but only when you consume them in the restaurant. The interior of Papavero is spacious and comfortable, and in warmer weather there is also a large terrace. The atmosphere is relaxed, pets are welcome, and an additional reason to head to the pizzeria in Mlinovi is the daily lunch for 11 euros - including a drink.
