Gault&Millau's review 2026

A lot of water has flowed since the residents of Rastoke, a picturesque village on the Slunjčica River, made their living from their mills. Today, the mills are beautifully restored and serve as a tourist attraction, while the locals work in tourism and hospitality. One of these families, the Petrovićs, own the restaurant Petro, whose offerings are inspired by the traditional way of life in the village. The Slunjčica River has always been rich in trout, which is now the star of their menu. They also prepare dishes from pike, game, lamb, and veal – all made in the regional style. Trout is grilled and served with baked potato halves, or as fillets with buckwheat or polenta cakes. They make steaks from bear and venison, burgers and sausages from various types of game, and the stews are made from wild hare and bear – both rich, hearty, and perfectly seasoned. Recommended dessert is the Mlinarska Cake: a polenta-based sponge from a nearby mill, with pieces of plums, cheese, and caramel – a delicious and authentic treat. The restaurant offers wines from all Croatian regions, the staff is skilled and warm, and the location is magical all year round – by the water, with the sound of waterfalls, murmuring streams, and the scent of nature.
