Gault&Millau's review 2026

The most striking point on the road from Zagreb to Plitvice is definitely the large bend above the Slunjčica River and the mills in Rastoke. It’s exactly the spot worth of slowing down and turning off the main road to the restaurant Ambar. Following the signs to Napoleon’s magazine – beneath the ruins stands this modern building, nicely integrated into the surrounding nature. The impressive view, the spaciousness, and the lush but well-maintained vegetation attract families, couples, adventurers, and those just discovering Croatia. But Ambar’s greatest value is its gastronomic concept: every dish is made from locally grown ingredients that change seasonally. Trout, for example, can be ordered as a main course, a warm appetizer with pasta, or a cold appetizer – such as fresh trout tartare with quinoa and leek crackers. Ambar also offers “short” bites from the Lika highway, such as pulled meat sandwiches, flatbreads with smoked bacon and škripavac cheese, and simplified main dishes without sides, like game, complemented by homemade bread. Škripavac cheese is excellent as a snack, in salads, or grilled, and the famous Lika potatoes truly have a unique flavour. Ambar also has vegetarian and vegan menus, a good selection of wines from Croatian vineyards, and an interesting craft beer offering.
