Gault&Millau's review 2026

It’s worth taking a turn from the highway toward Ozalj because the nearby Žganjer is known for its long-standing tradition and reliability. Here, you know what you’re eating, and you know it will be good. Their “signature dish” is spit-roasted lamb, cooked to perfection and served with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, onions, and tomatoes. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, seasoned just right. The menu also features numerous other meat specialties such as lamb liver pâté, homemade sausages, game dishes… Everything is homemade and prepared with care. The restaurant is also famous for strudels made from homemade puff pastry that breaks under the fork, and it’s hard to say which filling is better – apple and walnut or poppy seed and cherry. Jaškovo, where the restaurant is located, is also called the “strudel village” because a Guinness World Record was set here with a strudel over 3,000 meters long. This is a local pride, but also proof of how much they care about tradition. Dessert of the house is the luxurious Katarina Zrinski cake, rich in both appearance and flavour. For a complete experience, there are also local wines: Frankovka, Graševina, and Riesling. Warm and unpretentious atmosphere, great food and warm stuff are good reasons for visiting this place.
